On Friday night (09/30/05) at about 11:15 p.m. the Riverside Police and
University of California Police responded to the area of University Avenue
and Iowa Avenue in reference to a robbery that occurred near the Motel 6.
The officers met a male UCR student who said multiple suspects approached
him and demanded his money. Upon the victim's refusing to do so, the
suspects pushed the victim to the ground. One suspect displayed what
appeared to be a firearm and took the victim's cash. The suspects fled on
foot. Within a short time, UCPD and RPD officers found and arrested three
suspects nearby. The victim's money was found on one suspect and another
suspect claimed that the gun was a replica (fake) which we are still
attempting to locate.
UCPD would like to take this opportunity to remind our community
(particularly the new students) that a crime can occur at any time and any
where. Stay alert and try not to walk by yourself at night or in dark
areas. Please do not struggle or argue with an armed suspect. Instead
focus on getting a good description of the suspect's: height, weight,
clothing, vehicle and other distinctive features. When you are safe, call
the police immediately while the details are fresh in your mind. Remember
to dial 911 in an emergency.
